Springfield Study Committee: Evaluating a Learning Academy

Here is a follow-up post to the post a couple of weeks ago on the Springfield Study Committee.
At our last meeting, we analyzed a “Learning Academy Concept.” Recall that this was a proposal that was discussed which would target underperforming students.
You will recall the format in which I asked last time. As always, I look forward to your feedback. We will be meeting this week.

  1. EVERY school should be a Learning Academy.
Provide more teaching assistants and mandate that every school day set aside time to catch students up who need it, and help over-achieving students reach even higher.
    Also...
During Spring, Fall and Summer Break, REQUIRE failing students who are not in special ed to attend at least 3 days (Spring & Fall) or 2 weeks (Summer) in a specialized class tailored to what they are failing in. Pay volunteer teachers to do this, and document the students who fail to show up to the State Dept. of Education.
"Summer school" doesn't cut it anymore.
GET PARENTS INVOLVED and place a priority on parental involvement.
TIGHTEN the TRUANCY LAWS in Robertson County!!!

  2. How exactly would you mandate parental involvement? As an extremely involved parent, I would like to know how you suggest that we GET PARENTS INVOLVED when many have the attitude that the schools are solely responsible for educating their children? It's easy to say that increased parental involvement would solve a lot of problems - and I agree, it certainly would. If you figure out how to achieve that, I think we would all be interested in hearing your ideas.
